CHAPELLE DU TOMBEAU DE SAINT-CÉRATS Saintes 32420 SIMORRE FRANCE

The chapel of the tomb of Saint Cérats is traditionally a place of pilgrimage. This place became famous by miraculous healings: it is said that "the water that runs through the holy tomb is miraculous".

But who is Saint Cérats? Cérats was bishop of Grenoble around 450, driven out of the city for refusing to deny his Catholic faith, he moved to Simorre to develop this cult. At the end of his life he settled in a forest north of Simorre, followed by a series of miracles. This is how this place was named Saintes. At his death, his sanctity proclaimed, he became partron of Simorre. To pay homage to him, his sarcophagus will be buried in an oratory in Saintes. The legend around the discovery of his sarcophagus also contributes to the mysticism that surrounds this character and this place.

The chapel on the site dates from 1877, it is currently renovated by a group of rural heritage enthusiasts. To carry out their mission, they created an association: the Friends of the Heritage of Saintes. Demonstrations are organized to make this place live, especially on Whit Monday, to reconnect with the memory of the great processions of the past.

A document available in the Tourist Office, you will detail the history and interest of the place.
